Lyell Centre
To mark its bicentenary in 2007, the Geological Society of London was launched the Lyell Centre - the Geological Society's virtual library. Plans are already afoot to develop the Lyell Centre further, as the Society renews its library and information services for the 21st century. The building of the new website and the other online projects outlined here have been made possible by the generosity of our Bicentennial platinum sponsors BP and Shell
From May 2007, about 90% of the Society’s published book and journal content from the last 200 years will be available online. The Lyell Collection features the full content of its wholly owned journals, Special Publications and key book series, with new volumes being added as they are published. Much of this content will be free to Fellows.

The electronic catalogue of the Society's books, serial holdings (including selected special issues) and maps has been completed. Capturing this information electronically has been a major undertaking, and the completion of this task brings the catalogue entries to a common modern bibliographic standard, and allows powerful searching of the data through this site.

Most of the Society's map holdings are in series - a map which is too large to publish as a single item is split into a number of sheets, ranging from a few to many hundreds. Previously, the index data for the map series held by the Society - that is, the grid showing the layout of the sheets, along with the bibliographic data relating to each one, could only be viewed by visiting the Map Room at Burlington House. We have now captured this information electronically, and you can view it online via the Society's innovative new GIS (Geographical Information System). This allows you see the geographical extent of map series and the outlines of individual sheets, overlaying other map layers such as towns and waterways, alongside the associated bibliographic information. We hope to add other layers of useful data to the GIS in the near future.

The Lyell Room, located in the former library reception and staff work area, is a newly refurbished workspace with high capacity wireless internet connection, and the physical manifestation of the Lyell Centre at Burlington House.
Plans are underway to enable access to the Lyell Centre from dedicated locations in other regions of the country.
