Petroleum Geoscience Research Collaboration Showcase Meeting Summary (November 2010)
The Petroleum Group, in conjunction with the PESBG and AAPG re-launched this conference as part of PETEX in 2010 with resounding success.
This international conference showcased the best examples of industry / academia collaborative research by deploying a new presentation system. The organizing committee requested abstracts with joint or sequential presentations by student researchers and their industrial sponsors. This “buddy system” was intended to frame the industrial problem in addition to the reporting of technical results. The most successful of these “buddy style double acts” were those presentations where business challenges were addressed by research projects and where researchers were able to demonstrate societal and economic benefits.
The prize winners were as follows:
Talks
1st prize to Jennifer Pless and Andy Conway – Clair Field
2nd prize to Mark McKinnon and Simon Barker – Buzzard Field
3rd prize to Christina von Nicolai and Niels Schødt – South Atlantic Kwanza Basin
Posters
1st prize to Sam Matthews – Petroacoustic modeling of heterogenous sandstone reservoirs
2nd prize to Alanna Juerges – Burial diagenesis of fractured carbonates
3rd prize to Tim Watton – Hyaloclastites – reservoir or seal?
In addition to providing an early-stage forum for post-graduate and post-doctoral presenters to present their research results, this ‘conference within a conference’ provided an excellent opportunity for industry and academia to meet, get inspired and to develop future collaborative research links. Post-graduates and potential future employers also established connections.
The PG, AAPG and PESGB believe that this conference can be a vehicle to continue to foster, develop and celebrate the links between academic institutions and the energy sector. PETEX is a biennial event so I hope we can count on your support and attendance in 2012!
