Meeting Outline and Keynote Speakers

Scientific programme as follows:

  1. Building the planet: Keynote -  Sara Russell - “Forming the Solar System and the Earth: are we special?”
  2. Plate tectonics and the mantle: Keynote - Chris Ballentine - “Tracing the origin of terrestrial volatiles and the relationship between the mantle and the surface of our planet”
  3. Crust forming processes: Keynote - Craig Storey - “Crustal evolution and plate tectonics: new insights from accessory minerals”
  4. Terra-forming the planet (oceans and atmospheres): Keynote - Gideon Henderson -'Rating the Ocean' and Rachael James - “The evolution of ocean chemistry”


Information for Presenters

Oral presentations are to be 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. 

Posters should not measure any more than 180cm (height) x 90cm (width).

Car parking at the Open University during the meeting:

Please click on the link www.open.ac.uk/planetarygeology/pics/h105498.jpg to access the campus map for location of various car parks on the campus of the Open University. Unless you have appropriate permits for specially marked parking bays, please park in areas meant for general public. Parking is free on campus and is on first come first serve basis. Please note that parking fines are in operation in case vehicles are parked inappropriately.

The meeting will take place in the Berrill Lecture Theatre which can be reached via the main reception of the Open University (marked with "i" on the campus map).

All refreshments, lunch, and the evening reception will be provided to the registered delegates in the Berrill café (located downstairs from the lecture theatre).


Getting to the Open University, Milton Keynes


By Car

From M1, Junction 14: Follow signs for Milton Keynes, taking A509 to the third roundabout (Pagoda roundabout). Turn left on to Brickhill Street (V10) and continue along this, across several roundabouts for about 2 miles. At the University Roundabout, the main entrance to the campus is on your right.

From M1, Junction 13: Follow signs for Milton Keynes, taking A421 for 3.5 miles to the Kingston roundabout. Take second exit onto Groveway (H9), signposted A5/Aylesbury/Dunstable/Walnut Tree/Universities. Go straight over the next roundabout (Walnut Tree). At the following roundabout (Walton), turn right, then first left for the main entrance to the campus. Visitor reception is located in the Berrill Building.

By Train
The University is about 4 miles from Milton Keynes Central station, on the London (Euston) to Birmingham line. Trains are frequent and the journey time from Euston varies between 30-50 minutes.
