As of 1 April 2010, Eurocode 7 (BS EN 1997) became the required standard in the UK for geotechnical engineering undertaken on behalf of public funded bodies. Fortunately EC7 only applies to soils, and so those working in rock engineering and the engineering geology that supports it have been spared getting to grips with this new code. But is this true? Does EC7 really not apply to rock? And if it does, can we apply the principles within EC7 to rock engineering?
