11 November 2009 Soft Ground Tunnelling through London by Dr Ursula Lawrence.
EGGS/ ICE New York Local Association presentation on Crossrail at Offices of Arup New York.

This was a return visit following Peter Chamley’s enjoyable presentation on the 34th Street tunnelling project under the streets of New York. The presentation covered many aspects of Crossrail as could be crammed into 40 minutes. The most difficult part was checking all the slides for inclusion of imperial units as well as metric units. After the initial explanation of the scheme, coverage of the ground and groundwater conditions lead on to the risks associated with those strata generally. The more local risks associated with tunnelling in London itself was described both from a geological perspective e.g. faulting and scour features to the history of the city e.g. historic buildings and unexploded ordnance. Last but not least, the presentation was rounded off with the excavated material strategy and questions.

The audience was a good mix of locals and expats, contractors and consultants and the presentation seemed well received. It certainly led to many discussions afterwards, mostly regarding some of the differences and similarities of tunnelling through the two cities of London and New York.

Dr Lawrence has kindly provided a copy of the presentation, which can be downloaded via the link below.
