This event is intended to both inform through case studies, on experiences of the influence of geotechnics on quarrying, and to create a forum for discussion and sharing of practice, particularly on the geotechnical aspects underlying the Quarries Regulations 1999 ten years on. With contributions from the HSE, quarry operators including CEMEX, Hanson and Lafarge and consultants including GWP, Capita Symonds and SRK, a balanced suite of perspectives is expected and the potential cost and operational advantages the various geotechnical requirements can offer will be presented. Specifically, the presentations will cover:
  • Overview of the geological setting and its’ influence on quarrying in the UK
  • Exploring competency under the Regulations (qualifications, training, experience and knowledge)
  • The Excavation and Tips rules
  • The Geotechnical Appraisal: overview; experience in sand/gravel and experience in rock (case studies)
  • The Geotechnical Assessment: overview; experience in sand/gravel and experience in rock (case studies)
  • The application of UK practice to overseas quarrying and vice versa and the influence of the Mining Waste Directive
The event is particularly directed towards quarrying professionals, Geotechnical Specialists, engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers and others involved in stability related assessments in the quarrying industry. In a field where engineering geology manifests in one of its most pure forms, the event is also likely to be of strong interest to the wider engineering geology community.

Refreshments will be provided both before and after the meeting. Registration is from 1:30pm and the first presentations is scheduled to start at 2pm. For further details, please see the attached flyer.
