Engineering Geology of the French Alps around the Grenoble Area

Organised by: Engineering Group
Date: 5-7 June 2009
Event Type: Field Trip
Venue: Grenoble

Field Meeting

The annual Engineering Group Field Meeting will convene on the evening of Friday 5 June 2009 and will be of interest to engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, engineering geomorphologists, civil engineers, coastal engineers and geologists of all levels of experience.

The meeting will consider various aspects of the engineering geology of the French Alps around the city of Grenoble and will visit a variety of sites of engineering and geological interest.

Provisional Programme (Time permitting)

The meeting will convene on the Friday evening with a dinner at the Hôtel Les Mésanges‎, Uriage les Bains and will include 2 full days of field work with delegates returning to the UK on the following Monday. The evening will provide an opportunity to meet fellow delegates.

The area around Grenoble offers a unique opportunity to visit both hard rock engineering sites as well as complex glacial sections where a variety of glaciogenic materials encountered in the UK can be examined in much greater detail in cross section. Travel will be by MPV each day to selected localities around the Grenoble area.

Rock and soil landslides will be visited including the major deep seated gravitational slide at Sechilienne as well as extensive landsliding in the glaciolacustrine deposits at Sinard. Slope failure and landslide mitigation measures will be studied including debris flow and rock avalanche protection measures at Bourg D’Oisans and Ponsonnas. Hard rock engineering sites will include the arch abutment dam at Montenyard, gravity dam at Chambon and the Sinard and Charmantier tunnels.

Day 1
  • Montenyard Dam
  • Glacial, Fluvioglacial and Glaciolacustrine deposits, former Lac du Trieves
  • Sinard Landslide
  • A51 Autoroute and Sinard tunnels
  • Ponsonnas Landslide
  • Ponsonnas rock avalanche shelter
Day 2
  • Sechilienne Landslide
  • Sechilienne Ophiolite
