Richard Fox Shield
Competition Date: 18 October 2011
Now in its 9th year, the Young Geologists Award is an attempt to involve more young geologists within the activities of the regional group. The committee decided to create an award that enabled young geologists to present short talks to a panel of judges. It was thought that this type of event would give them experience in public speaking and presenting information to an audience, and build their confidence as young professionals.
We decided to name the award for Richard Fox, who founded the Thames Valley Regional Group in the mid 1970s. Richard has always actively encouraged and supported young geologists throughout his own 40-year career as a geologist with CEMEX, and so it seemed appropriate. We would like to thank Richard for continuing to support the award.
Building on the success of the first award (won in 2002 by David Emmanuel of Peter Brett Associates) The Richard Fox Young Geologists Award now offers a £100 first prize and the honour of having your name engraved on the prestigious Richard Fox Shield!
How to enter
The Young Geologists Award is open to anyone under the age of 35 for a geology-related presentation up to 15 minutes in length. The presentations are judged for the quality of presentation and knowledge of subject matter. The winner receives the Richard Fox Shield, along with a prize of £100.
This year the Young Geologist awards evening will be held on 18 October 2011 at Peter Brett Associates Office, Reading. Further details are available on the event page.
