The theme for this year's meeting will be 'Waste Management in the Extractive Industries'. CPD accreditation has been obtained from the Geological Society.
This one-day seminar will focus on the regulatory environment, technological solutions, and economic opportunities for valorising waste from the extraction of minerals. Speakers will address the difference between mineral waste and controlled waste, disposal of waste, land ownership with respect to fly tipping, restoration of tips, the implications of the new Mining Directive, optimisation of mineral processing flowsheets, materials security, EU sustainable production and consumption strategy, recovery of high value resources, and the utilisation of mineral waste.
Our invited speakers will be:
■ Mandy Gore – Imerys Minerals Ltd - Waste Management and its environmental issues in the China Clay industry - between the (waste) rock and a hard place
■ Roger Saxon – Environment Agency - Implementation of the Mining Waste Directive in England and Wales
■ Clive Mitchell – British Geological Survey - Quarry Fines Minimisation
■ Tony Hartwell – Resource Efficiency Knowledge Transfer Network - A Co-ordinated Approach to Sustainable Materials Management’
■ Prof. Peter Scott – Camborne School of Mines - Markets for waste from Mineral Extraction
Exhibitors and sponsors
This year, there will again be an opportunity for local businesses, membership and invited specialists to contribute to a Sponsors’ Exhibition and/or Delegate Information Sponsorship:
Exhibition: The cost for a standard exhibition space (approximately 2.5m x 1.5 m) and attendance at the conference of a single delegate (including lunch and refreshments) is £100
Delegate Information: For those companies that would like to be associated with the conference, but prefer not to host an exhibition space, there is the opportunity for sponsors to provide promotional material for inclusion in the Delegate pack (up to 3 items, size up to and including A4 size) for a cost of £25. These items could also be displayed at the conference, if wished. Please note that the Conference Secretary, must receive the items for inclusion by 19th September, including any specific instructions for display, if appropriate. Sufficient quantities of promotional materials must be supplied, as we are unable to undertake photocopying of items.
Space at the conference and in the delegate packs is limited, so organisations and individuals interested in taking part are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. Enquiries and requsts for booking forms should be sent to: swrg@geolsoc.org.uk. Bookings will be made on a first-come-first served basis and are confirmed on receipt of payment and a completed form.
Delegate Rates
Delegate fees and conference catering
This year, we have again decided to offer an ‘early bird’ discount for Members of the Geological Society that make their application and payment at least 1 week before the date of the conference (i.e. before 26th September). The Discounted Delegate rate is £26.00. Applications and fees received after this date should pay the Standard Delegate rate of £28.00, which is also the fee payable for applications received at any time by those who are not Members of the Geological Society, with the exclusion of those that are corporate sponsors of the event. We have pitched the price to just cover catering, room-hire costs and production of the Delegate Pack
The Delegate Fee includes: the cost of a Delegate Pack, tea/coffee on arrival, mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and a buffet lunch.
