Deep Drilling for Geothermal Energy in Central Newcastle
2011 has seen the drilling of a borehole to 1,820m in central Newcastle, in the search for deep geothermal energy. Although full testing of the borehole has yet to be completed, early indications vindicate the hypothesis of a geothermal gradient substantially above the UK average, and the presence of hundreds of metres of sandstones (potential reservoir rocks) in the lowermost 300m of the borehole. Some of the ups and downs of drilling will be explained, as well as the numerous features of geological interest encountered during drilling.
