All next week, Sarah Day and Ted Nield will report on issues of geoscientific interest from the BA Festival of Science.
We will not confine ourselves to papers presented within the Earth Science sessions, of which there are three (one being organised by the Liverpool University Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, another by the Palaeontological Association and a third by the Geology Section of the BA in collaboration with the Geological Society).A preview of the goodies on offer...

We will cover the whole spectrum to bring you wider issues - in science policy and science itself - that we think geoscientists will find relevant - with hotlinks to appropriate websites and to the lively BA Festival site – which we strongly urge you to visit. On Monday, Ted Nield will report as Sir David King, the 2008 President of the BA and former Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government, delivers his Presidential Address to the Association, exploring ‘sustainability through science'. Previewing his address, King says: "Our global civilisation is faced with a number of challenges on a scale unique in our history: these will only be met through the sustainable use of natural resources, reversing environmental degradation, tackling infectious diseases, and mitigating and adapting against the impacts of climate change."
And Sarah Day will look at how the new UK Diamond Synchrotron Facility in Oxfordshire is helping researchers refine the "dirty snowball" hypothesis of comet composition, with some truly remarkable findings that will alter our conception of the early evolution of the Solar System.
