The building was purchased by the Government in 1854 as a home for The Royal Academy of Arts and the learned societies, including the Geological. The Society’s apartments were completed to the designs of Charles Barry and R.R. Banks between 1869 and 1873 in an unusual example of Victorian classical architecture.
