IUGS and ICSU
The External Relations Committee is responsible for Geological Society adherence to IUGS (the International Union of Geological Sciences). IUGS is the umbrella body for national geoscience societies. It supports and sponsors the IGC (International Geological Congress) meetings held every four years.

The IUGS is a member of ICSU (the International Council for Science), along with the other international scientific unions. ICSU also has national members, usually the principal scientific academy or research council of a country - in the UK's case, the adhering body is the Royal Society.

The Royal Society provides funding opportunities for UK-based scientists to attend overseas meetings of international bodies which are part of the ICSU family, such as the IUGS, provided that the main purpose of the visit is 'ICSU family business', e.g. the administration of IUGS or the organisation of IUGS activities, or those of other international scientific unions. This scheme is open to all UK-based office holders and those involved with ICSU family organisations. Closing dates are 1 March, 1 June, 1 September and 1 December.
Full details of the scheme are available at royalsociety.org/icsu. The Royal Society also provides a wide range of other funding opportunities to support outstanding scientists at royalsociety.org/funding.
The International Council for Science recently instituted the World Data System as a new ICSU Interdisciplinary Body which replaces the ICSU World Data Centres (WDC) and the Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical data-analysis Services (FAGS). If your organisation is interested participating in the new ICSU WDS, please go to http://wds.geolinks.org and complete the brief expression of interest to help the WDS Scientific Committee get a feel for the scope of the new WDS.
