The Geological Society Library is delighted to present its latest event, as part of the Burlington House courtyard Summer Lates programme.

Visit our geological salon and hear about how the first geological maps of Britain were created, the theories on the origins of meteorites before the concept of modern science, the identification of the Jurassic marine reptiles discovered by Mary Anning and the audacious Piltdown fraud which fooled the leading scientists of the day into believing that Britain was the cradle of modern humanity. The evening will be a chance to view some of our archives & special collections, including the Society’s very own meteorite which fell in 1822!

The evening will consist of a lecture on meteorites and a pre-lecture lightning warm-up talk!

MAIN LECTURE 7.30 - 8.30pm

Meteorites - "Stones said to have fallen from the clouds”, Professor Paul Henderson, FGS, University College London

Farmworkers knew from bitter experience that stones came from the heavens, sometimes with dramatic sounds and sights, but they were not believed by the savants. Prejudice and disbelief were finally overcome through unusual ‘rock hard evidence’ at the end of the eighteenth century.  But do we really now know all the answers?

PRE-LECTURE LIGHTNING TALKS 7.00-7.20pm (randomly assigned)

Compare and Contrast : exploring the earliest geological maps of our nation, John Henry, FGS, & Duncan Hawley, FGS

Mary Anning and the first Ichthyosaurs, Tom Sharpe, FGS, Lyme Regis Museum

The Men Who Made Piltdown, David Bate, British Geological Survey
