This Northumbria University event for Earth Science Week will introduce William Smith, geological mapping, geological time, local geology and palaeoenvironments to Year 5 pupils in the North-East region. This will be done through a hands-on 2.5 hour session, where children will have the opportunity to experience their local geology through rocks, fossils and maps.
The children will learn about William Smith and how he used rocks and fossils to draw the very first geological map. We will then present the children with rocks and fossils from the Carboniferous – Permian formations of County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. We will work with them to work out palaeoenvironments (coal measures, marine sediments, igneous rocks) and create a simplified geological map of the North-East.
The learning outcomes are twofold:
- expand the pupils knowledge of Earth Science and
- engage the children with the geology of their local area.
This event is aimed at ages 9-10 (School Year 5); rocks are introduced in Year 3 and the children should have a basic knowledge of a map.
