I am a Fellow and I have logged into the Lyell Collection but I am prompted again for a username and password when I try to view or download an article from a book / journal

Fellows can view and download articles from JGS, QJEGH, PG or GEEA (when they subscribe*) and from books older than the current or three previous calendar years (the Book Archive**).

*Fellows receive one free subscription to a Society journal of their choice (JGS, QJEGH, GEEA or PG). Fellows who subscribe to JGS, QJEGH, PG or GEEA as a free or additional journal will be able to access the full content of the relevant journal.

**Fellows can purchase an annual subscription to the Full Book Collection which extends electronic access to all book titles (from the date of publication). For a full list of the book titles on the Lyell Collection and their direct links please see Publications Catalogues. No journal content is included in an FBC subscription.

The fees for additional member journals and the Full Book Collection are listed here - Membership Fees
To amend your membership options please contact the membership department.

Articles from newer titles (published in current or three previous calendar years) or journals to which the fellow does not subscribe can be purchased on a pay-per-view basis at US$30.00 per article (purchased articles are available for download for 24 hours) or via the Society Library (please contact the Library for current pricing).

The Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society (PYGS), Scottish Journal of Geology (SJG) and Journal of Micropalaeontology (JM) are also available via the Lyell Collection. As these are not Society journals fellows can only access content of the relevant journal by using pay-per-view, purchasing a non-member subscription or by joining the relevant membership organisation. YGS for the Proceedings, GSG or EGS for the Scottish Journal or the Micropalaeontological Society for the Journal of Micropalaeontology.

Will I receive the paper version of my membership journal?

The default renewal option for Geological Society fellows is online only. Please see your renewal form for details on how to receive print copies or contact the membership department.

Will I be notified when a new issue of the journal I subscribe to is published in the Lyell Collection?

Fellows can sign up to receive emails alerting them to the publication of each new issue in the Lyell Collection by following the instructions on the Online Journal Alerts page.

My organisation is a corporate member of the Geological Society of London – do we automatically receive access to the Lyell Collection?

No, the only way to access the Lyell Collection content is to use pay-per-view or to purchase an annual library/institutional subscription.

I am a member of the Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG) / Geological Society of Glasgow / Edinburgh Geological Society / Yorkshire Geological Society / EAGE - how do I access my membership journal?

AAG members can access Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis via the Lyell Collection. To activate your membership access go to the access activation page and enter your subscriber ID number in the bottom right hand box and click Submit. Your subscriber ID is your membership number with the prefix AAG (e.g. AAG9999). Follow the instructions on the next screen and complete parts A and B. In part B, you will need to set your own user name and password, which you will use when you next login to the Lyell Collection site.

Geological Society of Glasgow and Edinburgh Geological Society members can access the Scottish Journal of Geology via the Lyell Collection. Access activation instructions.

Yorkshire Geological Society members can access Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society via the Lyell Collection. Access activation instructions.

EAGE members should access Petroleum Geoscience via the EAGE website.

PESGB members who subscribe to Petroleum Geoscience via the PESGB should contact the membership office for their subscriber id. PESGB members can also access PGC 4, 5 and 6.

Non-member / organisation Lyell Collection access queries

What is included in a Lyell Collection Complete subscription?

A Lyell Collection Complete subscription includes access to:
  • Journal of the Geological Society,
  • Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology,
  • Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis,
  • Petroleum Geoscience,
  • Journal of Micropalaeontology,
  • Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society,
  • Scottish Journal of Geology,
  • Geological Society of London Special Publications, Memoirs and Engineering Geology Special Publications.
  • Transactions of the Geological Society.
  • Petroleum Geology Conference Proceedings (volume 4 onwards).
There are 3 options for LCC subscriptions: 1) Online only, 2) Online + all print, 3) Online + print Special Publications.

Corporate subscribers should note that the subscription to a Lyell Collection product entitles them to access in all offices within one country (by IP addresses submitted by the subscribers’ administrator). A separate subscription is needed for each country in which access is required.
(An academic subscription authorizes use at a localized site.)

Although there is most interest in the Lyell Collection Complete, it is possible to subscribe only to the Special Publications. However, Memoirs, Engineering Geology Special Publications, Transactions of the Geological Society and Petroleum Geology Conference Proceedings will only be available to those subscribing to the Lyell Collection Complete.

What is the cost to subscribe?

Please see the subscription rates page for current prices.

Lyell Collection product subscription rates are charged by the geographic location of the end user (not by the delivery address for the print copies). All UK end user subscription rates include VAT.  EU VAT registered end users are not subject to the VAT charge (when their VAT number is included with order and payment).

Lyell subscription products are available as Online or Online + print  – what does this mean?

An Online + print subscription includes print copies published in the subscription year and on-line access to all current and archival content. Please note that book titles can be published online 4 to 8 weeks before hard copies are available for dispatch.

An Online only subscription includes on-line access to all current and archival content.

How do I activate my institutional/company subscription?

Go to > Subscriptions > Activate your institutional subscription

Please enter your subscriber id (this is listed on the subscription receipt and it has an uppercase “i” at the end e.g. 9527615I). Please complete your internal administrator contact details in section B and enter your own administrator username and password in section C. Click Send Form.
On the next page click Register my institution's IP addresses - please list the relevant IP addresses for access.

Please keep a note of the administrator username and password so you can make amendments to contact details or add or amend IP addresses in the future.
Once your access is activated and the IP addresses are registered you should not have to re-activate for each subscription year.

If you do not know your subscriber id please contact your agent or email with your full postal address and order reference.

What happens to access if my organisation/company does not renew its annual subscription?

A subscriber for 2011 and 2012 who does not renew for 2013 would receive perpetual access to the relevant content published in final volume form during 2011 and 2012 (this is not automatic and must be requested at the time of cancellation). Note that Online First articles not published in final volume form by the end of a calendar year are not included in this right to perpetual access.

A pre-2008 subscription does not entitle a user to access Lyell hosted past content. For subscriptions previous to 2008 the print copy was the copy of record and electronic access was a free add-on. Once a subscription lapsed, electronic access was switched off.

How does my institution/company obtain a free 30 day trial?

Please email Accucoms (UK, Europe, Middlea East and North Africa), PCG (USA and Canada) or the Publishing House with a preferred start date for the trial together with a contact name and email address, institution or company name, mailing address and a contact telephone number.

Please note that trials are not available to individuals - ask your librarian or administrator to request a trial for your institution or organization.

Can you provide a copy of the license terms?

In the absence of a separate license agreement the Geological Society of London adheres to the SERU guidelines, as published on the NISO SERU website - SERU: A Shared Electronic Resource Understanding

My institution already subscribes to GeoScienceWorld (GSW) – is content the same?

There is some overlap between the journal content on Lyell Collection and GSW. However, no book content is available on GSW and the deep Journal of the Geological Society archival material (1845 to 1970) is only available via the Lyell Collection. Subscriber ids for Lyell Collection subscriptions will not work on the GSW site (GSW is also hosted by HighWire Press so the sites have a similar format).

Is there a limit to the number of simultaneous users on one institutional/company subscription?

For institutional subscribers, there are no usernames or passwords to remember for access, and there is currently no limit on the number of readers from your institution who may access the Lyell Collection simultaneously.

Any user connecting from an authorized computer on your institutional network will be allowed access to the Lyell Collection. When someone attempts to access content, our host’s server checks to see if the requesting computer is within the list of internet IP address provided by a subscribing institution. If it is, the reader will be able to use all those services enabled for institutional readers.

What is my IP address?

Click on Feedback (link at the bottom or on the right of each Lyell Collection site page), scroll down to the bottom of the page and your IP address will be listed in bold text.

How can I tell if my institution/company has subscribed to the Lyell Collection?

If your institution has a subscription to all or part of the Lyell Collection, you'll automatically have access to the full text display and PDFs of the subscribed to content (if your IP address has been registered by your internal administrator). You should see the company or institution name in the grey bar at the top of the page confirming you're recognized as part of an institution.

My institution has a subscription to all or part of the Lyell Collection but I'm not able to see the full text of articles. I'm prompted for a username and password. Why is this happening and what should I do?

The IP address for your machine is not being recognized by the site host. This failure is caused by one of four things:

  • Your institutional subscription has not yet been activated
  • The internal administrator who activated the online subscription did not register all the required IP addresses for your institution
  • The internal administrator who activated the online subscription does not realize that some subnets of your institution are routed through a proxy server
  • The subscription taken by your institution does not include the journal or book you are trying to access.

Talk to your librarian or administrator, and let them know you are having trouble. If they cannot solve the problem please use the Feedback link at the bottom or right of each site page to provide details of the problem.

(Feedback queries are answered by the site host HighWire Press in the USA.)

Usage statistics are available for each of the individual parts of the collection at the links below (please login using the access administrator username and password):

The HighWire Administrator Toolbox will help enable you to manage your subscriptions in one place. This includes information on COUNTER reports, Shibboleth profiles, SUSHI feeds and OpenURL configuration.

Shibboleth access is enabled for Lyell Collection titles. If your institution is part of a Shibboleth federation then you can establish a profile (please login with your administrator username and password). Athens access is not currently available.

The Geological Society offers readers specially-designed mobile sites for four Lyell Collection journals (JGS, QJEGH, GEEA and PG).

My library purchases print copies of titles in the Lyell Collection but I can't get access to the content online.

If your institution subscribes to any of the Lyell Collection content then online access is enabled automatically, so the reason you cannot get online access is that your institution has not yet activated its institutional subscription or your IP address is not registered. Please notify your librarian or access administrator.

It is possible to purchase the Special Publications, Memoirs and Engineering Geology Special Publications in print only form, but the entitlement to online access to this content is conditional upon a subscription being purchased. If no subscription covering all Lyell Collection content has been purchased please talk to your librarian and encourage them to do so.

How can I access the Lyell Collection if I am not a GSL member and I don't have access through an institutional subscription?

If your institution does not subscribe, you can choose to join the Geological Society and access much of the online content as a member benefit, or subscribe to content as an individual non-member. If you do not wish to do either of these you may purchase content on a pay-per-view basis.

Are the ejournals preserved for the future in an Archive?

GSL has partnered with the CLOCKSS Archive to ensure the digital preservation of Lyell Collection content for the future.
