As a Fellow you will join an international community of geoscientists, with around 12,000 Fellows worldwide in over 80 countries, with 20% based outside the UK. Fellows cover the spectrum of geoscience professions, from industry and consultancy to education and the public sector. Fellows are entitled to the postnominal ‘FGS’ to mark their commitment to the highest standards of professional behaviour.

Fellows receive a free subscription to one of three online GSL journal(s) option from the Lyell Collection, with other GSL journals and print copies available for a small extra payment. Discounts are also available on subscriptions to other GSL journals, as well as Geology Today and GSA’s Geology.

25% off RAS or GSL Fees

Fellows who are members of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Geological Society can receive a 25% discount off the RAS rate 3 and GSL 34 - 59 age band membership fees. This allows Fellows who are interested in astronomy and geodesy to enjoy the benefits of membership with another highly regarded learned society also located at Burlington House. 


Free to Fellows, the Society’s monthly colour magazine has news, views, features and an events calendar.

  • Fellows receive free online access to more than 400 volumes in the Book Archive.
  • The Full Book Collection: For a small additional fee Fellows may subscribe to the Full Book Collection which includes all new and recent GSL online books.
  • Bookshop: Fellows are entitled to receive up to 50% off the Society’s highly acclaimed Special Publications and most other books available from the Online Bookshop or from the Burlington House Bookshop.

Geofacets-GSL Millennium Edition

For a small additional fee Fellows have the opportunity to gain exclusive individual access to over 24,000 geological maps from the Lyell Collection through the Geofacets platform. This innovative map-based research tool offers downloadable, geo-referenced maps, accompanied by metadata, article abstracts and read only PDFs from the original articles in the Lyell Collection.
