EVENT CLOSED
Due to unexpected circumstances we have had a change in speaker for this talk. Apologies for the short notice and any inconvenience this may cause.
We do however have an exciting alternative to the talk that was planned.
Synopsis
Silbury Hill is the largest Neolithic monumental mount in Europe and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is located just to the North of the A4 near to the village of Avebury in Wiltshire. It is part of a complex of monuments from this period in time in the vicinity of Avebury Circle and Stonehenge.
In 2000 a hole opened up in the top of the hill which lead to fears that the structure might be in danger of collapse.
This talk blends together archaeology and geology and looks at the investigations carried out into the hill, both recent and ancient, and what was done to stabilise the hill for future generations.
During the stabilisation works was buried treasure found or was something more sinister discovered?
Speaker
Mark Roberts is currently Chair of the Thames Valley Regional Group and was geological consultant to Skanska UK which was engaged to investigate the collapse and stabilise Silbury Hill on behalf of English Heritage, the custodians of this ancient monument.
Venue
Jacobs offices, 1180 Eskdale Road, Winnersh Triangle, Reading RG41 5TU
Time
Talk starts at 7:00 pm. Tea/coffee available from 6.30 pm
