Speaker: Jo Godfrey, Hydrogeologist at ESI

In early 2014, a widespread groundwater flood event occurred across the Thames Valley, causing notable disruption to businesses, infrastructure and homeowners. In places, the flooding was river-derived, but in most situations it was groundwater driven as a result of record high groundwater levels.

Groundwater flood events are of longer duration than traditional fluvial flooding and are often delayed following a period of high rainfall. The prolonged duration often exacerbatesproperty damage and losses, having a significant effect on socio-economic activity. Understanding the mechanisms of groundwater flooding, and hence the locations that are at risk, helps businesses and home owners prepare, and can help mitigate the impact of any flooding.

This talk will present the mechanisms for groundwater flooding, and discuss groundwater flood risk mapping and its implications for homeowners and businesses.

The meeting will begin at 7pm.
