The first city wide ground source heat map for the City of Cardiff
A city wide map of shallow groundwater temperatures has been produced for the City of Cardiff. This is the first of its kind in the UK and is aimed to help support the sustainable development of ground source heating. The map shows that there are elevated groundwater temperatures across the city: this is part of the ‘urban heat island’ effect.
As part of a recent InnovateUK project the British Geological Survey, WDS Green Energy Ltd and City of Cardiff Council have been working in partnership to further characterise shallow groundwater temperatures across the city, under both natural and pumped conditions. A 3D geological model of the city has been produced as a framework to better understand how to manage the subsurface.
The project has also supported the installation of an open loop ground source heat system in a council run school providing a secure source of low carbon heating.
