Rationale, Design and Behaviour since Construction
Managed realignment involves setting back of coastal defences and allowing formerly defended rural land to be flooded by tidal waters. It allows for more sustainable defences and can create valuable new intertidal habitats. Nonetheless, uncertainties remain in how such schemes are accepted by local communities and how they will evolve in the future.
This lecture will examine the realignment scheme completed in September 2013 at Medmerry nr. Selsey, West Sussex. It will explain the past coastal defence problems and the rationale for realignment. It will then summarise the design and construction of the scheme.
Finally, it will examine the evolution of the flooded area focussing on the retreating gravel barrier beach and the eroding breach channel that are generating new exposures of underlying geology.
Speaker
The speaker will be Dr Malcolm Bray (University of Portsmouth).
