Water supplies for the conurbation of Brighton and Worthing and surrounding area are entirely dependent on groundwater. These resources are under pressure from increasing demand, reductions due to adverse environmental impact and the risk of more severe future droughts.

Through the National Environment Programme, ecological and hydrogeological data collation and analysis has guided the development of conceptual and numerical models of the aquifer. Stochastic recharge time series representing both historic and projected future severe droughts and climate change scenarios are being used to support resilient water resource investment and management plans for the next 25 years and beyond.

Following the success of the Brighton and Worthing modelling, similar tools are planned for the Chalk on the Isle of Wight and North Kent.

The speakers will be Mike Packman and Simon Cook (both Southern Water).
