The Palo Redondo Dam and Chavimochic Irrigation Project

Palo Redondo Dam and Auxiliary Works is part of the Chavimochic Irrigation Project in Peru that will provide irrigation of about 63,000 hectares of new lands and improve the irrigation system of another 48,000 hectares. The project consists of the construction of a 97 m high Concrete Face Rockfill Dam that will create a reservoir in the Palo Redondo dry riverbed in order to regularize the water supply.

The Palo Redondo Dam is founded on sedimentary rocks on the right, abutment and igneous rocks on the left abutment, and over alluvium and gravel on the riverbed which will be intercepted by a diaphragm wall. The dam crest length is 570 m and the embankment contains over 8,000,000 m3 of alluvial gravel.

The spillway tunnel and plunge pool is on the left abutment. The right abutment was selected to place the intake and adduction tunnel which will connect to the existing irrigation scheme through 2.6 km restitution tunnel.

The presentation will discuss the geological and geotechnical aspects of the works.
