A talk by Michael Smith (Mike Smith, BSc, CGeol, CChem, C.WEM, FGS, FRSC, MCIWEM, MIMMM)
The presentation will concentrate on how contamination is dealt with in the revised BS 5930. It will also describe the potential impact of the new ISO 18400 series on sampling for the determination of soil quality on BS 10175 on the investigation of potentially contaminated sites. Contamination is important when carrying out ground investigations because of the potential for impact on the safety of those carrying out on-site works and for impact on the environment if inappropriate techniques are used or works are carried out in an inappropriate manner.
The revised BS 5930 states clearly that investigations of contamination should be carried out in accordance with BS 10175 and investigations for ground gas in accordance with BS 8576. However, the revised standard recognises that investigations for contamination will often be carried out in conjunction with engineering investigations and that there can be technical and economic benefits in doing this, provided the achievement of the objectives of the respective aspects of the investigation are not compromised.
Cross-references to BS 10175 and BS 8576 have been introduced into the text wherever necessary to highlight how the approach required for contamination investigations differs from that being described as necessary for ground investigations. Adherence to BS 10175 requires adherence (as appropriate) to a number of standards in the ISO 10381 series on sampling for the determination of soil quality, specifically BS ISO 10381-1 (sampling strategies), BS ISO 10381-2 (sampling techniques) and BS ISO 10381-3 (safety). These will shortly be replaced respectively by BS ISO 18400-104, BS ISO 18400-102 and BS ISO 18400-103, requiring BS 10175 to be amended. The changes introduced by ISO 18400-104 (Currently a Committee Draft) will be of particular importance.
Time
Buffet at 7pm for a 7.30pm talk start.
Speaker
Mike Smith, BSc, CGeol, CChem, C.WEM, FGS, FRSC, MCIWEM, MIMMM
Mike has a Joint Degree in Chemistry & Geology from Nottingham University. He started his involvement with contaminated land in 1977 as the first Secretary of the Interdepartmental Committee on the Redevelopment of Contaminated Land (ICRCL).
Mike has been involved with the development of British and International standards relating to the soil quality for over thirty years. He contributed to the development of BS 10175 and BS 8576 and a number of international standards. He is currently a member of the BSI Working Groups dealing with the revision of BS 5930 and BS 8485 (protection of buildings against ground gas). At international level his major involvement at the moment is the development of the ISO 18400 series on soil sampling.
