The South Devon Railway opened in 1846 and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It takes a route from Exeter to Newton Abbott running beneath sea cliffs for several miles. The cliffs comprise Permian breccias and sandstones, are up to 60m high and at various locations are very steep. There is a long history of cliff failures along the alignment since the railway opened, most notably in 2012 and 2014, the latter in conjunction with the sea wall breach, which closed the railway line for 8 weeks.

Nick John, Network Rail’s Route Asset Manager for Earthworks Assets will talk about the 2012 and 2014 incidents including a review of failure type, the impact of the failures, the solutions, and future risk mitigation and remedial work of the cliffs.
