This seminar provides an overview and update on the process of becoming a Chartered Geologist. Application numbers for Chartership continue to rise and recently the applicants web pages have been totally reorganised to simplify the information and to provide a Step by Step guide to an application. Information is provided for Sponsors and for Scrutineers so that the 3 groups can see what each is being told.

Information on the timing and content of a good application will be summarised as some applications are made just as soon as the applicant is eligible to apply and not when they are 'ready' for Chartership, others are not focused on the geological competencies but on competency in their job. The role of the Sponsor is important here in advising to maximise the chances of success. Of note is that some 12 companies have now got accredited training schemes with the Society and 4 more are being assessed. These guarantee that trainees have mentoring support, Sponsors who know their work and can advise on the focus of the application. The link with the Society also ensures that applications are sent when the applicant is ready for Chartership.

For those who do not have a company mentor the Society has in place a system to help provide such help. Bill will also talk about the vital role of Scrutineers and Mentors. In order to continue service to the Fellowship, Chartered Fellows with 10 years' relevant experience are encouraged to apply to become Scrutineers and/ or Mentors.
