A joint ICE and SERG meeting

Hooley Cutting is on the north side of the North Downs just south of Croydon on the main London-Brighton railway line and is over 100 years old. In recent years there have been a number of land slips from the steep cutting sides. Following preapration work over the Christmas and New Year period at the end of 2011, Network Rail commissioned a £7.5 million contract to provide stabilisation to the cutting. An interal collaboration between BAM Nuttall Rail and specialsit geotechnical division BAM Ritchies successfully carried out the work completing in early 2013.

The project was a double winner at the 2013 ICE SEE Engineering Excellence Awards, winner at the 2014 Ground Engineering EAwards and winner at the 2014 Construction News Awards.

The talk provides a short history of the issues necessitating the stabilisation work, will cover the design development aspects and the construction works which included some innovative techniques as well as dealing with the presence of 'Roman  Snails' - a protected species. The remedial solution was completed with trains running as normal, therefore not affecting passenger journeys.
