Many of the shops and houses in Dorking have extensive cellars and interconnecting galleries, some of which date back to medieval times. The South Street Caves form part of this system and are thought to have been used to store wine, groceries etc. as they remain at 14 ºC all year round.

This tour of the caves will last about 45 minutes, led by two volunteer Guides from Dorking Museum & Heritage Centre, and will afford an opportunity to see the medieval well shafts and the galleries thought to have been excavated in the 17th and 19th centuries.

Cost

There is a charge of £5 per head, payable to the South East Regional Group Treasurer on arrival.

Booking

Numbers for the tour are very limited and MUST be booked in advance by sending an email to [email protected] (see link opposite or attached flyer) in order to confirm that places are still available and to register your place.

Please note also that access requires visitors to be fit enough to descend and climb a 12 meter staircase and, as usual, suitable footwear must be worn as conditions underfoot are likely to be uneven/wet.  Hard hats will be provided and must be worn at all times when underground.

Venue

To be confirmed on registration.
