Rory Mortimore of ChalkRock Ltd will lead a South East Regional Group Field Trip to the Newhaven to Brighton Coastal Cliffs.

Event Details:

Meet at 10.00am in the car park at the left at the far west end of Newhaven Harbour west cliff (Castle Hill), beneath the Chalk Palaeogene cliffs (OS NGR: TV 445 999; Approx Postcode for Sat Nav BN9 9DN)

Our trip will begin with a look at the Chalk/Palaeogene contact and illustrate how we work out the detailed Chalk stratigraphy and determine the extent of the Chalk/Palaeogene unconformity. We will also look at growth faulting and bedding slip structures

As high tide is at 14.50 hours (6.76 m) the remainder of the day will be spent on sections of the undercliff walk, first at Peacehaven Steps, and then studying the impact of dry valley weathering on the Chalk at Saltdean and Ovingdean.

During the day we will discuss how the coastal cliff geology has been used to aid analysis of the geology along the route of the Brighton & Hove Sewer Tunnels and coastal cliff instability issues.

Please bring a packed lunch, sturdy foot wear and the appropriate wet weather gear. Finish time is expected to be about 4pm.

PLACES ARE LIMITED SO IF YOU WISH TO ATTEND, PLEASE LET US KNOW BY RESPONDING TO: [email protected]
