I have not received an order confirmation by email for my online bookshop order, what does this mean?

First, please check your spam/junk mail folder in case the message has been diverted. If it is not there please email us with the order details to clarify.

I have tried to place an order but the system will not accept my payment details, what should I do?

If your payment is by Visa, MasterCard or AmEx please check that all the card details on the payment screen are correct. Cards can be refused authorisation for several reasons - insufficient funds, a block on foreign or charity transactions or recent suspicious activity on the account. Please contact the card issuer to check if there is a problem.

Please contact us before placing your order again to ensure it is not duplicated.

If the card payment window does not appear please ensure that you are using the latest secure version of your internet browser.

Do I have to pay VAT (Value Added Tax) or import fees / duties ?

VAT in the UK is 0% on books. The standard UK rate of VAT (20%) will be added automatically to UK orders on DVD, Video, CD-Rom, stationery (calendars and Rite in the Rain products) and rolled maps and charts. Once your delivery address is confirmed at checkout the appropriate VAT will be charged.

The delivery charge for orders dispatched outside Great Britain does not include any applicable import duties, customs fees and taxes due in the recipient country. Please check your country's postal service website for potential import taxes, duties and fees.

If you order items from our site for delivery outside of the UK, you may be subject to import duties, fees and other taxes which are levied when the delivery reaches the specified destination. Whoever your order is addressed to is responsible for all costs associated with the import of the products, and will be required to pay any additional charges for international delivery. (If you are ordering products to be delivered to someone else, please make sure that they are aware of this before you order.)

Please note that we have no control over these charges and cannot predict their amount. We recommend that you check with the local customs officials or post office for more information regarding importation taxes/duties that may be applicable to your order. If your order gets held-up in customs, you or the recipient will need to contact your local customs office and pay any necessary additional charges or taxes to release the goods. Unfortunately, we cannot do this on your behalf. Orders are returned to us if the fees are not paid within the required period.

EU VAT registered companies and institutions: please enter your VAT number in the relevant field during checkout. Please also include your EORI number in the delivery address if you have one.

The Society VAT number is GB 877 0147 09.

Does the purchase of a print copy of the book include access to online content?

The purchase of a print or DVD/CD version of a book does not include access to the online content. All items listed on the online bookshop are physical products (e.g. hardback or paperback books, rolled or folded maps and DVDs) that will be dispatched from our Bath warehouse.

Pay-per-view content purchased on the Lyell Collection site does not include a printed copy of the book/journal issue/article.

I am a Bookseller, how can I get my bookseller discount?

Please email your order to us as it cannot be processed through the online bookshop. The trade discount is 10%* and normal postage rates apply. If you pay online the full amount will be charged as payment is immediate (the difference will not be refunded).

*Trade discount does not apply to Sale titles or titles distributed by GSL for other publishers. Please order Mineralogical Society, Wiley-Blackwell, Dunedin Academic Press, British Geological Survey, Collins Press, Worple Press, Granta, Cambridge University Press, EAGE, ICE, Rite in the Rain or Whittles publications direct from the relevant publisher.

How can I view and purchase Sale items?

Online sales are run throughout the year and items can be viewed in the online bookshop during the sale. Sale titles must be ordered and paid for online within the sale dates to obtain the reduced price. You do not have to be a GSL member or register on the site to purchase items at the sale rate. Sign up to our bookshop newsletter to be kept informed of upcoming sales.

Why is there no ‘Add to Basket’ option on the title I want to order?

Products with no ‘Add to Basket’ button are unavailable for one of the following reasons which will be visible in the product listing:

  • Not Yet Published – The title will be available to buy as soon as we receive stocks into our warehouse. Please note that the Publication Date on the listing is an estimate.
  • Out of Stock – The title is on order from the publisher or reprinting. If you require an out of stock item please email the sales department with the details and we will try to provide a date for availability.
  • Out of Print – The title is no longer available. If an alternative edition is available there will be a link in the product description. We do not hold stocks of out of print titles - please try a second-hand bookseller for a print copy. For GSL titles you may be able to view content of the title electronically via the Lyell Collection.
  • We no longer distribute this title – please contact the publisher direct to place an order.
