Friend membership

Friends of the Geological Society membership is open to all amateur, non-professional geologists. It was launched following the Shell London Lecture series (now known as the Public Lecture series) which stimulated many people to ask how they could support the Society and find out more about the exciting work being done by geologists to address the intellectual and practical challenges of the 21st century.


A Friend can enjoy many benefits including:

  • Free access to the Geological Society’s Fellows’ lounge - relax in the Fellows' lounge in Burlington House and read current journals and papers.

  • A discount on Special Publications - Friends can claim a 40% discount on the list price of books in the Society Special Publications series.**
  • A quarterly copy of Geoscientist - our membership magazine features a range of interesting geoscience articles and Society news items.
  • Society Newsletter - learn about forthcoming events and activities.
  • Access to the Society's Regional Group activities - the Society has Regional Groups across the UK and welcomes new members. All Friends can join their nearest Regional Group.

The Friends of the Geological Society of London (GSL) membership is open to all amateur, non-professional Earth scientists.

In addition to non-professional Earth scientists, we also welcome those who hold an Earth science degree (or related), but who have either never worked as an Earth scientist or have not worked in that capacity (and not been a Fellow of this Society) for at least 2 years.


Joining as a Friend costs £52.50 for a calendar year. Please bear in mind the fee for the first year of friends membership will be pro-rated
