On Saturday, February 9, 2013, a train driver reported a “rough ride” along the Up Slow line between Doncaster and Scunthorpe, adjacent to Hatfield Colliery. Train services were carefully managed to protect public safety, and the condition of the track deteriorated as evidence of large scale ground movement was observed.
By the time ground movement had stopped, over 1,000,000 cubic metres of spoil material had moved, and all four of the line’s tracks were lifted and twisted up to 5m vertically and 15 m laterally.
An emergency programme of work was instigated, and with collaborative working between several parties the railway lines were re-opened to traffic in July 2013.
The emergency programme of work will be described in an illustrated presentation.
Time:
Lecture starts promptly at 18:30.
