Asbestos is just one of many challenges we face during ground investigation and the development of brownfield sites where it may be in demolition stockpiles or within made ground owing to previous site activity and/or material re-use. Although the hazards of asbestos have been well known for a significant period of time, guidance on risk assessment and remediation of asbestos in soil to facilitate site redevelopment is lacking leading to inconsistency and uncertainty within the industry.

The Joint Industry Working Group (JiWG), established in 2011 by EIC and CL:AIRE on behalf of industry (public and private), plans to address the challenges with asbestos beyond that which is intact within existing buildings.. SoBRA held a very popular workshop conference during the Summer of 2013 to determine how industry considered the risks of asbestos, identify the challenges posed and the way guidance should be directed. Following this conference SoBRA produced 5 protocols and a report regarding the risks of asbestos in soil. Subsequent to these publications and CIRIA C733, the UK laboratory services have recently produced guidelines for methods to analyse for asbestos in soils.

This talk will discuss the work being undertaken by the SoBRA asbestos in soil sub-group including the protocols developed and case studies demonstrating how sites can be investigated and developed safely in line with current legislation and guidance.
