The Water Framework Directive underpins
environmental legislation within the UK. This talk
will focus on the WFD and groundwater within the
North West. Recapping the aims and objectives of
the WFD and how groundwater is “classified”, this
talk will give an overview of the current chemical
and quantitative status of groundwater within the
North West and what has happened since the last
River Basin Management Plan was published in
2009.
On the groundwater quality side the significant
water management issue of diffuse agricultural
pollution and nitrate in groundwater will be
discussed.
From a groundwater resources perspective the
forthcoming changes to the abstracting licensing
regime, known as “new authorizations” and the
state of groundwater resources within the North
West will be explained.
