Earth Science Week: 8-16 October 2016

Earth Science Week: 8-16 October 2016

The Society has hosted Earth Science Week since 2011. Last year, over 50 events were run across the country, promoting the amazing geology all around us in the UK and Ireland, and we’re hoping that 2016 will be even bigger.

Earth Science in Action

This year, we’ve launched our new geology careers web pages, highlighting the range of careers available to geoscience graduates. We’d love to hear from geologists around the country about their work and where it takes them.

With this in mind, the theme for 2016’s Earth Science Week is ‘Earth Science in Action.’

Enter your action shots in our Photo Competition

This year’s photo competition shares its theme with Earth Science Week – ‘Earth Science in Action.’ Photographers can interpret the theme in any way they wish – from the dynamic processes that shape our Earth, to fieldwork or exploration. The only rule is, images must feature the geology of the UK & Ireland. The deadline is 19 September and shortlisted photos will feature in our 2017 calendar. Find out how to enter.

Get involved in running an event

To register an event as part of Earth Science Week, please download the registration form and return to Sarah Day as soon as possible.

All ideas are welcome – feel free to interpret the theme however you choose!

Geowalks

Could you host a geowalk in your local area, or provide information for self guided tours? Throughout Earth Science Week, we’re encouraging people to take part in geowalks in towns, cities or the countryside – send us details if you’d like your walk to be included in our listings.

If you’d like to go on your own self guided geowalk, you can find a range of links to self guided walks on our geowalks page – if your area isn’t listed, why not write your own and we’ll add it to the events listing.

School visits

If you are a geologist or work in a geological field, can you donate some of your time to visiting a school and talking about what you do, or running a workshop? We’d love more geologists to take part in school workshops – let us know if you have ideas, or have a look at our lesson plans for some inspiration.

If you’re a school or college interested in a visit from a geologist, get in touch!

Talks

Are you giving a talk relating to geology, or organising one, during Earth Science Week? We’d love to feature it in our event listings. If you’d like to organise a talk, get in touch with one of our Regional Groups, or your local British Science Association branch. Why not organise a cafe scientifique – a talk in an informal setting such as a pub or cafe, in your local area?

Hands on activities/workshops

If your organisation can organise a workshop, school visit or hands on activity during Earth Science Week, we’d love to hear from you. We have a range of geological specimens available to borrow - get in touch for more details.
