Geology of the Lakes: Delving Deeper: the Lower-Middle Palaeozoic Era

Led by Dr Annette McGrath, this course will examine the Palaeozoic geological origins of the Lake District in detail, through a series of talks and practical sessions. We will scrutinise the deep sea sediments of the lost Iapetus Ocean followed by a dissection of the cataclysmic volcanoes that once reigned in this area. Our investigations will complete with the final collision of the supercontinent Pangaea in the Devonian.
The course provides detailed information on the Early to Mid-Palaeozoic (Cambrian/Ordovician to Devonian) geology of the Lake District, provided via:
- A series of PowerPoint presentations,
- A practical session to look at a large selection of rocks, minerals, fossils, thin sections and geological maps from the Palaeozoic of the Lake District. A large selection of rocks, minerals and fossils from around the world are also available for students to handle.
- A field trip to examine early to mid-Palaeozoic geology in the Lake District.
The course includes a geological trip so please wear suitable clothes!
