Geological Society Accredited Masters

The Geological Society Accreditation Scheme for first degree and Masters courses is an established mark of quality that has been awarded to over 150 courses. Accredited status shows that a course will provide students with the opportunity to gain all of the core skills necessary to continue to a career as a professional geoscientist.

Holding an accredited degree allows you to apply for Chartered Geologist status one year earlier than those with unaccredited degrees. Holding two accredited degrees (e.g. BSc and MSc) allows you to apply two years earlier.

Funding your Masters

From August 2016, MSc students in the UK may be eligible for a Postgraduate Loan of up to £10,000 from Student Finance England to help with course tuition fees and living costs. To be eligible you must you be based in England, (you didn’t move there just to study) and not already have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification. In the same way as an undergraduate loan, interest is added from the day you receive your first instalment, and you only begin repayments once you earn more than £21,000 per year.

Alternatively you may be able to fund your Masters course through a Professional and Career Development Loan. These are low interest loans of up to £10,000 to help with training and courses that will help people to develop their careers. Unlike Postgraduate Loans, they are provided by banks not the government and rather than being dependant on your salary, you must begin repayments on your loan one month after your course has ended.

Some universities may offer scholarships to fully or partly cover tuition fees for certain Masters courses. These are usually only offered to a few students based on financial need or academic merit each year. A limited number of Industry-funded places are also available. Places may be fully funded or shared across a number of applicants to provide part-funding. Currently funding for Masters courses is extremely competitive, but always worth applying for if you fit the requirements.
