Doing More with Less
A panel discussion on the complexity of making decisions and growing profits in oil and gas exploration with less time and less resources

The Geological Society of London, in conjunction with Elsevier is hosting a panel discussion to address the oil and gas industry challenges around meeting the rise in demand for petroleum resources as companies face rising costs and shortened project timelines.

  • The average development cost worldwide increased to $4/boe, up from $1/boe just a decade ago
  • Internal rate of return on full-cycle developments have declined to 12% in the last decade
  • Licensing timeframes have reduced by 50% from a decade ago

How will the oil and gas industry address these trends in the next few years?

Our panellists will consider:

  • What are driving these trends? Complexity of decisions, complexity of technology?
  • The rising costs of technology and commercial complexity have not been matched with higher prices and margins are slimming – how will cost cutting affect the overall business from upstream to downstream?
  • What is the trickle-down effect? How will it affect the geoscientist vs. the exploration team leader vs. the CEO?
  • Will these trends continue? If so, for how long? If not, when do we see a turnaround?
  • Does shale gas, LNG, or deep water exploration have an impact? If so, to what degree? What exploration areas are affected (Arctic, South America, Africa)
  • Does harnessing big data have an effect on increasing profitability margins?
  • In terms of how exploration teams work and how they invest time and money in data, tools or resources, what changes have there been in organizations / companies in the last year or so?
  • What are the key risks from cost cutting that heads of exploration teams need to be aware of?
