Student / Early Career Travel Award to attend STRATI 2015: 2nd International Congress on Stratigraphy

STEPPE (Sedimentary Geology, Time, Environment, Paleontology, Paleoclimatology, Energy) is an NSF-supported consortium whose purpose is to promote multidisciplinary research and education on Earth’s deep-time sedimentary crust. 

The STEPPE office, in collaboration with the American Geosciences Institute (AGI), Geological Society of America (GSA), the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), and the Paleontological Institute are pleased to offer funding for graduate students and early careers scientists to travel to Graz, Austria to attend STRATI 2015: 2nd International Congress on Stratigraphy, and an NSF-funded workshop, “Vouchering the Stratigraphic Record.

A committee comprised of representatives from the collaborating societies will read and evaluate student applications. Applications will be evaluated based on the quality of written abstracts and will be granted to those who have compelling reasons to attend.

Eligibility & how to apply

Students/early career scientists must be actively conducting research in disciplines related to stratigraphy and sedimentology. Those planning to present research at STRATI 2015 will be given priority for funding.

To apply, students/early career scientists will need to submit the following:
  • An abstract that details your current research program. If planning to present at STRATI 2015, then an abstract of the work presented at the meeting (including all co-authors and affiliations) should be submitted.
  • A statement (no more than one page) that includes your current position (e.g., Ph.D. student), post-doc, institutional affiliation, date of MS or Ph.D. (received or anticipated), society affiliation(s), a list of other sources of funding that are available, and a short explanation of why (professional, financial need, fieldwork oriented, etc.) you should be chosen to receive a travel award. In addition, applicants should discuss their interest in attending the NSF-funded workshop.

Post-meeting reporting

Awardees will receive a maximum of $2500 to be used towards their travel expenses. 

After the meeting, awardees will submit blogs describing their experiences and any professional benefits that they gained from attending the meeting. These will be posted on the STEPPE website. In addition, awardees will contribute to a group article about the meeting and its value to students. This article will be published in multiple venues offered by the partner societies.

Deadline

Applications will need to be submitted in PDF format to the STEPPE office ([email protected]) by May 8, 2015. 

Students will be notified of the status of their awards by May 29, 2015.
