This compilation of papers is an outgrowth of technical sessions held in Calgary in 2002 (Annual Conference of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists) and in Dallas in 2004 (Annual Conference of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists). These sessions, entitled Facies Models Revisited, were intended to capture the state of the art with respect to facies modeling in several key depositional environments. We recognize that not all depositional environments are covered here, nor are all analytical tools given full representation. This volume is focused on clastic depositional settings including continental (aeolian and fluvian estuarine, shoreface, deltaic, shelf and deep water. This compilation represents a snapshot in time of our ever-evolving understanding of depositional environments. 

The SEPM chose to publish this compilation in CD format so that 1) costs could be kept low, and 2) authors would not be restricted by reprographics cost with regard to the numbers of figures as well as color. The approach that we encouraged the authors to follow was a first-principles rather than a model-driven approach. Our philosophy was to provide the reader with the tools and rules to create their own models rather than providing them with “canned” models or “templates”. Following this approach, we believe that geoscientists will develop better and more predictive facies or depositional models. We hope this volume will find a niche with both academic as well as industry and government geoscientists.
