To commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WW1, this talk will look at the contribution the British Geological Survey made to the war effort during the First World War, including producing geological maps for the Western Front, advising on water supplies and researching into materials used in aeroplane compasses.

It will also cover several individual geologists and what happened to them during the war (including two future Directors of the Survey) and the potential dangers to field geologists, who could be mistaken for German spies.

Speaker: Andrew Morrison

Andrew Morrison is an archivist at the British Geological Survey.
