David Banks first travelled to Afghanistan in summer 2001, with the aim of developing “do no harm” guidelines to assist humanitarian organisations in the responsible use of groundwater in the absence of any state management of water resources.

This talk will plot a course from those days of damage limitation and emergency water supply, through attempts to reconstruct decimated urban water supplies in 2002, right up to more sophisticated present day projects to map the groundwater resources of the nation, to characterise surface-groundwater interaction and to quantify available resources.

The latter part of the talk will focus on the hydrogeological mapping of a single Province, Faryab, in north-western Afghanistan, and will present our current understanding of the hydrogeology, recharge mechanisms and hydrochemistry of this area. Along the way, our hydrogeological pathway will be illuminated by musings on kingfishers and Leonard Cohen, and an array of waistcoats will be available for viewing.
