Geotechnical soil and rock testing has been an integral part of most UK ground investigations for over 75 years.  Results of such testing have been used to verify strata descriptions and to aid in the derivation of material parameters.

With the increasing pressure on project timescales, the requirement for faster data accumulation and the advent of more sophisticated in situ tests, it is perhaps time however to review the usefulness of geotechnical laboratory testing? Can the industry continue to afford the luxury of such testing, or should it be moving to a situation where a combination of in situ testing and existing material data sets are used for design purposes?

In other words can we inform the ground model without resorting to geotechnical laboratory testing?

Paul Nowak will make the case in favour of the motion, whilst John Powell will make the case for retaining laboratory testing. This will be followed by a panel discussion with contributions from the audience.
