15th Glossop Medal Lecture: 'Terrain and Geohazard Challenges for Onshore Pipelines in Remote Regions.’

The 2015 Glossop Medal Lecture will be delivered this year by Mike Sweeney MSc DIC FGS CEng FICE, until recently, BP Upstream Technical Authority Geotechnics

Synopsis

Throughout much of the 20th Century, traditional pipeline industry practice did not address terrain risks in many remote onshore regions. Modern safety and environmental standards require a step change, and orders of magnitude of risk reduction. The 15th Glossop Lecture will address this challenge, and present some experiences in narrowing the gap between the pipeline and the various geotechnical professions.

The main themes will be the working methods used on major projects: subject specialists and geoteams; geohazards and the risk process; quantifying terrain driven costs in construction; and the value of and approaches to terrain evaluation and ground models. The themes will be illustrated by examples drawn from pipelining in the Andes, the Sahara and the Caucasus regions.

Preceded by the 18th Glossop Award presentation: Joshua Morland (Atkins): 'Cooper’s Hill Landslide: Building on Experience’

The Glossop Award is a prestigious award made annually to an outstanding young engineering geologist or geo-environmentalist.
