Risk based management has been the preferred approach for dealing with land contamination in the UK and elsewhere for many years. When it comes to assessing risks to human health, assessments are often focused on chronic risks from long term exposure to contaminants in soil. Whilst chronic risks are often the driver for remediation, the potential for short-term exposure causing acute health effects should not be ignored, particularly where contaminant concentrations are highly variable across a site. Guidance on assessing acute risks from soil contamination is limited and for this reason, the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessment (SoBRA) has set-up a sub group to try and address this gap.
This talk will describe the work that the sub-group has undertaken, and aims to inform delegates on the type of approaches that can be taken for assessing acute risks.
Speaker
Simon Firth is an independent consultant with 20 years experience working on land contamination projects. Simon, a hydrogeologist by training, specialises in human health and environmental risk assessment for land contamination related projects in the UK and abroad. He was project manager and principle author of the EIC, AGS, CL:AIRE generic risk assessment criteria and, more recently, he was part of the Defra funded research project to develop Category 4 Screening Levels (C4SL). He is currently chair of SoBRA.
