In September 2014, the British Science Association is bringing the British Science Festival to Birmingham, in partnership with the University of Birmingham and in association with Birmingham City Council, Birmingham City University and EDF Energy.
Birmingham is recognised as being at the forefront of scientific and technological advancement and the presence of the British Science Festival will enhance this reputation. The Festival offers an unrivalled opportunity for the region to showcase its science and technology credentials to the UK and around the world.
The British Science Association's Scientific Sections play a crucial role in developing the Festival programme, organising talks, demonstrations, field excursions, exhibitions and other activities for the duration of the Festival week encompassing all aspects of physical and social sciences.
Programme
The full public programme is now available on the conference website. There is also a young people's programme aimed at students and apprentices.
The Geological Society will be supporting a session on Monday 8 September from 1:30-2:30 pm, jointly with the Geography Section:
'Megafloods: Myth & Reality'
Accounts of catastrophic, flood events
appear throughout history, in eye witness
accounts, mythology and historical
records. But how large have megafloods
been both in recent years and in the
geological past? What can geological
evidence on Earth, and on other planets,
tell us about the reality of megafloods?
Explore the causes and effects, the
geological records they leave behind,
and the likely locations and impacts of
such events in the future.
